Guan Wei

Guan Wei is one of the most significant contemporary artists from China’s modernist art movement of the 1980s. Upon immigrating to Australia in the late 80s, he began melding the cultures of Australia and China, exploring the circumstances and diverse potentials of different civilizations against the backdrop of globalization. Using legends, mythological and epic narratives within grand surreal landscapes, his artworks present an image of the world, which subverts history and reality, experience and transcendence, conflict and confluence. His reserved, humorous approach effortlessly tackles the weighty topics of imperialism, post colonialism and the merger of East and West core values.
His work has been included in important international exhibitions such as the Asia Pacific Triennial and the Shanghai Biennial, representing either himself as an independent artist or a representative from Australia. He currently lives between Australia and China.
