Safaruddin Bin Abdul Hamid/ Dyn (b. 1977, Singapore)
Dyn chronicles the Singapore landscape in a most unique manner, by depicting familiar local buildings, shop-houses and neighborhoods in a super flat composition, void of human presence, gathering the outline and characteristics of the architecture but not its shadows and depth. Associating memory to place, the artist informs the viewer of nostalgia by employing a bright "pop" candy-colour palette to create a vision of vacant optimism and cheer. For instance, paintings of Pre-war housing estates such as Tiong Bahru or the façade of Cathay cinema emerge from old photographs to which the artist also attaches his personal childhood memories while referring to a sense of loss and melancholy.
Safaruddin Bin Abdul Hamid (also known as "Dyn") obtained his Diploma in Fine Arts in painting from LASALLE – SIA College of the Arts, Singapore. He later received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia and went on to get his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Open University at LASALLE – SIA College of the Arts.
In 2011, Dyn showcased his works in an exhibition called Traces at the Chan Hampe Galleries at Tanjong Pagar. In 2010 he had an exhibition called Playtime at the Karin Weber Gallery in Hong Kong. Dyn was a recipient of the Winston Oh Travel Scholarship in 2002 and again in 2004 and The Della Butcher Award (Certificate of Merit) in 2003, both awarded by LASALLE – SIA College of the Arts.
