Artist's Biography

Tay Bak Chiang (b. 1973, Malaysia)

After graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1995, Tay Bak Chiang’s artistic career took him across Asia to countries including Korea, Japan, Singapore, and China. In 2002 he was awarded the Young Artist Award for Visual Arts by the National Arts Council and in 2003 received first prize for the Traditional Chinese Medium Category of the 22nd UOB Painting of the Year Competition.

With a strong desire to not only observe nature but also to continuously learn from it, Tay's contemporary ink paintings incorporate varying degrees of personal narrative. At times, motifs such as birds and flowers are used to objectify his thoughts and emotions, while at other times the emphasis on the subject itself allows the viewer to appreciate the simplicity and innovation of nature.
